7:00pm Studying Mule Deer in the Upper Powder River Country
Date: Wednesday, October 23, 2019
Start Time: 7:00pm
End Time: 9:00pm
Where: Sheridan College, 1 Whitney Way, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA

As an icon of the west, mule deer are of particular significance in Wyoming. But mule deer populations aren’t what they used to be. The Upper Powder River mule deer herd outside of Buffalo and Kaycee has been declining since the early 2000s. Several management strategies have been implemented to bring the population back to objective without success. A multi-year research project is now underway to provide a better understanding about the population dynamics of this mule deer herd. While the project is ongoing, Wyoming Game and Fish would like to share some insights gained so far. Join Wildlife Biologist Cheyenne Stewart for a discussion about the study’s early findings – causes of death, deer health and migratory strategies of these deer. This program is brought to you by The Sheridan College Museum of Discovery Science Lecture Series. For more information, contact Dr. Scott Newbold at 675-0770 or snewbold@sheridan.edu.

Date: Sunday, October 27, 2019
Start Time: 1:00pm
End Time: 4:00pm
Where: Big Horn Women's Club, Big Horn, WY.

Cynthia Vannoy will present, “WWII P.O.W. Camp in Clearmont,” at the next Big Horn City Historical Society program. In 1945, Clearmont was the home of a Prisoner of War camp that housed mostly German soldiers. There were other camps in the area, notably in Douglas; Greeley, Colorado; and Scottsbluff, Nebraska. There was a shortage of men in Sheridan County to help with the sugar beet fields due to the war. These P.O.W.’s were from the Douglas camp and helped with the crop in the Clear Creek Valley. Since many of the early settlers in the Clearmont area were of German heritage, this helped with the language and other traditions. Cynthia’s talk will focus on the camp and the people who “employed” the workers in the beet fields. For more information, contact Judy Slack at (307) 751-5741.
