To manythe word “fossil” or “paleontology” immediately conjures images of dinosaurs, with the ferocious T. Rex and the giant long necks, Brontosaurus andApatosaurus, at the forefront. When asked, “what are the coolest fossils youhave found, or collected?” Most are waiting to hear harrowing tales of massivefossils that take days or weeks just to excavate an individual bone, and yearsto excavate and prepare one specimen. But can the ‘coolest’ fossil be one thatcan fit inside your hand, or on the head of a pin? Could it be one of tenpacked inside a pill gel capsule? This presentation, and research, looks atsmall vertebrate fossil collection; how are these important fossils found andcollected, and why? What information do they provide that perhaps the largeindividual specimens may be lacking? As well as discussing the ways in whichthe Western harvester ant plays a critical role in the process of discovery andcollection of some of these tiny fossils. Free to the public.
