Show Location Date: Wednesday, November 18, 2020 Start Time: 7:00pm End Time: 8:00pm Where: Zoom How do we track time? Join medicine wheel researcher and scholar Dr. Ivy Merriot on a journey exploring how ancient peoples observed and interacted with time as recorded in the stones of the Bighorn Medicine Wheel and the petroglyphs of Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site. Time is based on Earth’s relationship to the rest of the universe, yet even today’s advanced computers have not perfected timekeeping technology. The time and date we use on our smartphones is not real; it is an arbitrary, cultural construct, disconnected from the real universe we live in. To know and track time as the earth moves through changing cycles, we need a sophisticated technology that is not vulnerable to solar flares, EMP generators, or arbitrary changes by governments. Our ancient ancestors used such a technology. They scribed time into the designs etched in rock and created markers by the placement of stones. Their connection to the landscape and its interaction with the sky and visible universe shaped an accurate method of keeping time. In the Bighorn Mountains, not far from Sheridan, Wyoming, the high altitude Bighorn Medicine Wheel gives evidence of multi-millennial time-keeping. Fifty miles to the south at a far lower altitude, pecked petroglyphs at Medicine Lodge Creek interact with Sky Beings and Shadow Beings, enabling humans to understand and keep track of our scientific relation to the Sun and Moon, the source of time for humans. Large and powerful cattlemen, backed by eastern and European investors, flooded the prairie with herds often numbering 50-80 thousand head. They had visions of doubling or tripling their money quickly while their cattle grazed on the free grass of the open range. Others, like Martin Gothberg wisely invested in the future of the young frontier. Starting with a humble 160-acre homestead in 1885, he continued to expand and develop a modest ranch that eventually included tens of thousands of acres of deeded land. Through the lens of this family saga--a part of the history of the West comes to life in the hands of this storyteller and historian. Show Location |
