Thirty-two contemporary Oceti Sakowin artists created artworks for this exhibit. Seventeen additional Oceti Sakowin writers crafted poems or prose for the seventeen articles. Seventeen Oceti Sakowin and Northern Plains musicians created songs that are available online. Between April 29, 1868 and November 6, 1868, one hundred fifty-eight representatives of the Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires) Confederacy signed the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty. Work gloves, eye protection for anyone who needs it, water fence pliers and T-post pullers will be provided. Once complete, volunteers are invited to stay for a BBQ. The main talk will begin at 2 PM, but visitors can come and go as they wish. The demonstration will be performed by Rick Laurent, who has been flint knapping for decades. Laurent, who went on to work for the US Forest Service for more than 25 years and retired as an archeologist, has a degree in anthropology from the University of Wyoming. It was while working with colleagues that he learned the skill. After long days in the field doing anthropology and archaeology work, the crews would gather around a fire to relax. A professor and some others who knew how to flint knap taught Laurent, and he has been honing his skills ever since. He loves the anthropology component and also the aesthetics of flint knapping. Thirty-two contemporary Oceti Sakowin artists created artworks for this exhibit. Seventeen additional Oceti Sakowin writers crafted poems or prose for the seventeen articles. Seventeen Oceti Sakowin and Northern Plains musicians created songs that are available online. Between April 29, 1868 and November 6, 1868, one hundred fifty-eight representatives of the Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires) Confederacy signed the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty. Curator Craig Howe, Ph.D. defines for us the divisions of the Oceti Sakowin Confederacy: Dakota (east) is comprised of 4 tribes, Nakota is comprised of 2 tribes and Lakota has 1 tribe. Master Leather Carving from North America and Japan –Design and Cultural Influences looks at traditional carving and the cross-cultural influences of Sheridan-style carving on Japanese leather artisans along with a wide diversity of Japanese contemporary work. The Verizon-Cellular Plus Backpack to School program incorporates employees, customers, and vendor partners. An internal employee donation program was organized while stores are also accepting donations from their guests in order to help as many families as possible. Donations stay local so each backpack that is donated at a specific location will be distributed to children in that same area. No purchase is necessary to receive a backpack, but a child must be present with an adult to claim their free backpack.
