Thirty-two contemporary Oceti Sakowin artists created artworks for this exhibit. Seventeen additional Oceti Sakowin writers crafted poems or prose for the seventeen articles. Seventeen Oceti Sakowin and Northern Plains musicians created songs that are available online. Between April 29, 1868 and November 6, 1868, one hundred fifty-eight representatives of the Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires) Confederacy signed the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty. Curator Craig Howe, Ph.D. defines for us the divisions of the Oceti Sakowin Confederacy: Dakota (east) is comprised of 4 tribes, Nakota is comprised of 2 tribes and Lakota has 1 tribe. Jackson who is a National Endowment for the Arts 2019 National Heritage Fellowship recipient, 2019 Wyoming Governor’s Arts Award recipient and The Brinton Museum’s resident leatherworker. Included by invitation are 10 “best in their field” leather artists from North America and 15 “best in their field” contemporary leather artists from Japan with one Japan artist residing in California. A color-illustrated catalog - printed in both English and Japanese - with an article by Jim Jackson and biographical information on each participating artist accompanies this show. Show Location 10:30am Creative Aging Voice Class Date: Thursday, August 4, 2022 Start Time: 10:30am End Time: 11:30am Where: The Hub On Smith, 211 Smith St, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA WYO PLAY and The Hub on Smith are teaming up again to offer two new Creative Aging classes! Registration is open to participants who are aged 55 years and up for a Voice Class with Amanda Patterson of Aspen Grove Music Studio and a spontaneous Storytelling Class with local author and storyteller David Sage. Classes will be held on Thursdays in August and September in the Hub Community Room. Participation is free of charge because the Creative Aging project is funded through a grant from the Wyoming Arts Council. The Voice Class with Amanda Patterson welcomes singers with or without previous experience. Enjoy the experience of making music in a group while learning and getting reacquainted with your voice. Aside from practicing song selections, participants will learn proper vocal technique and receive feedback to improve skill, stamina, and confidence. This class will meet from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays between August 4th and September 22nd. Maximum 15 participants. Montana, Wyoming and Colorado representatives from Zonta International will provide information about Zonta and starting a club in the Sheridan area. Come and learn more about Zonta’s work improving the lives of women and their families. It is a non-partisan group whose activities include service and advocacy across many categories of concern including matters related to women’s employment, safety, education, finances, employment, health, legal rights, the environment, and engagement in leadership roles. We also encourage networking between all walks of life and professions and like-minded organizations. Zonta was established over 100 years ago, with 1,133 Clubs in 63 countries. The site is also known elk habitat. The fence will not be replaced, allowing wildlife to move freely through the pastures. Volunteers will aid in pulling T-posts, removing staples and rolling wire. SCLT has gloves, eye protection, fencing pliers, t-post pullers available and will provide coffee, pastries and drinks for volunteers. Master Leather Carving from North America and Japan –Design and Cultural Influences looks at traditional carving and the cross-cultural influences of Sheridan-style carving on Japanese leather artisans along with a wide diversity of Japanese contemporary work. This exhibition is scheduled to open during the time of the annual Rocky Mountain Leather Trade Show in Sheridan. Jackson who is a National Endowment for the Arts 2019 National Heritage Fellowship recipient, 2019 Wyoming Governor’s Arts Award recipient and The Brinton Museum’s resident leatherworker. Included by invitation are 10 “best in their field” leather artists from North America and 15 “best in their field” contemporary leather artists from Japan with one Japan artist residing in California. A color-illustrated catalog - printed in both English and Japanese - with an article by Jim Jackson and biographical information on each participating artist accompanies this show.
