Simpson is a printmaker, sculptor, and installation artist based in Seattle, Washington. A daily ritual is to walk along the beach just steps from home in search of driftwood or plywood pieces degraded by the waves, which he uses to make his relief prints, cyanotypes and serigraph series. Show Location Date: Sunday, March 10, 2019 Start Time: 12:00pm End Time: 4:00pm Where: Whitney Center for the Arts, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA Artist Statement Integral to my creative activity is the interplay of tension and humor, for it is in moments of awkwardness and discomfort that I find the greatest edification. Frequently focusing on the human body, I dwell on the nasty little details that are inexorable parts of corporality. Despite the unsavory nature of these subjects a quality of tenderness and compassion pervades each image. My work reflects the anxieties and concerns that occupy my thoughts, personifying my fears and exaggerating my foibles. The mix of seemingly contradictory notions- tenderness and repulsion, humor and seriousness, refinement with sloppiness- reflects the emotional and intellectual ambivalence that inspire me as an artist and a person. In my art I dwell upon the questions that trouble me, not in search of answers, but to better comprehend the nuanced layers of contemporary existence. There is something frightening in certainty- a black and white view of the world can lead to absolutist decisions and the suspension of empathy. The search for tidy answers tends to trim away the complicated messiness of human existence. In embracing the sordid I explore the relationship between the self and society, questioning the ideals and expectations that run counter to the realities of physical existence. Probing my personal discomforts, I seek ultimately to gain a better understanding of myself and the world. Show Location Date: Sunday, March 17, 2019 Start Time: 12:00pm End Time: 4:00pm Where: Whitney Center for the Arts, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA Artist Statement Integral to my creative activity is the interplay of tension and humor, for it is in moments of awkwardness and discomfort that I find the greatest edification. Simpson uses artifacts marked by the passage of time— both natural and man-made detritus—in his sculptural and printmaking practices, transforming them into contemporary statements. While working with a range of processes, materials, and aesthetics, Simpson’s work is unified by a graphic immediacy and the artist’s practice of gathering found objects to repurpose into art. A daily ritual is to walk along the beach just steps from home in search of driftwood or plywood pieces degraded by the waves, which he uses to make his relief prints, cyanotypes and serigraph series. With an incredible level of artistry and an irresistible energy, the quartet draws in new and seasoned listeners through creative programming, informative and engaging interactions from the stage, education, and communicating a passion for music in all that they do. Founded in 1978, the Cascade Quartet was formed by the principal players of the Great Falls Symphony with a mission to bring high quality chamber music performances to the city of Great Falls and further enrich the cultural experience of its residents. The quartet presented the first season of the Great Falls Symphony’s Chamber Music Series and enabled the Symphony to expand its impact through many outreach and educational programs in the local schools as well as the Great Falls Youth Symphony. Through the years, the Cascade Quartet travelled hundreds of thousands of miles, performing concerts and bringing outreach and educational opportunities to communities throughout Montana and the Northwest. Their success as string quartet has taken the group beyond the region and attracted renowned artists to Great Falls. In 1996 the Cascade Quartet was one of five ensembles selected for Chamber Music America’s Educator/Ensemble Seminar at Oberlin Conservatory, and in 1998 the quartet participated in a cultural exchange concert series with the Lethbridge Quartet from Canada. In 1999 the Cascade Quartet organized the highly successful Weekend Chamber Music Festival at the University of Great Falls, with the collaboration of the internationally renowned Ying Quartet. In 2003, the quartet collaborated with celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma in conjunction with his concerto performance with the Great Falls Symphony. The Cascade Quartet also actively contributes to their field by supporting the creation of new music. Since its inception, the quartet has commissioned and premiered many works, including new pieces by Grammy nominee Philip Aaberg, MacDowell Colony Fellow Mara Gibson, and Montana’s own, world renowned: David Maslanka. Today’s Cascade Quartet includes violinists Mary Papoulis and Megan Karls, violist Maria Ritzenthaler, and cellist Thad Suits. Simpson is a printmaker, sculptor, and installation artist based in Seattle, Washington. Show Location Date: Sunday, March 24, 2019 Start Time: 12:00pm End Time: 4:00pm Where: Whitney Center for the Arts, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA Artist Statement Integral to my creative activity is the interplay of tension and humor, for it is in moments of awkwardness and discomfort that I find the greatest edification. Simpson is a printmaker, sculptor, and installation artist based in Seattle, Washington. Simpson received a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from the School of Fine Arts and Design of Iowa State University. He was awarded a 4 Cultu (View Full Event Description Here: http://www.whitneyarts.org/event/david-simpson/) Show Location Date: Friday, March 29, 2019 Start Time: 10:00am End Time: 7:00pm Where: Whitney Center for the Arts, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA Price’s exhibition “The Intimacy of Duplicity” will remain on display in the Edward A. Show Location Date: Sunday, March 31, 2019 Start Time: 12:00pm End Time: 4:00pm Where: Whitney Center for the Arts, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA Artist Statement Integral to my creative activity is the interplay of tension and humor, for it is in moments of awkwardness and discomfort that I find the greatest edification.
