29 9:00am Gene Stewart Memorial Art ExhibitDate: Friday, March 29, 2024 Start Time: 9:00am End Time: 5:00pm Where: Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library, 335 W Alger St, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA The Sheridan Fulmer Public Library will host the Gene Stewart Memorial Art Exhibit on the mezzanine from April 4 through April 30, 2024. A biography statement supplied by Gene’s family reads: “At an early age, Gene L. Stewart started to draw cowboys and horses. Her talent as an artist grew and began to include wood working, leather tooling, and decorating animal skulls. As a young adult, she painted with oils, acrylics, and pastels. Gene was always interested in western life, particularly rodeo, and her paintings began to reflect the western lifestyle. Working primarily in acrylics, her focus turned to Native Americans. Her painting, “The Milasco Six” featured six Indian Chiefs on their arrival at the Capitol of the United States. The painting hung for several years in the lobby of the WYO Theatre. After her husband died in 1978, Gene moved to Sheridan to be close to family, and became active in the artists’ community. She was a member of the “Off the Wall Gang” along with fellow artists Dean States, Ginny Bohart, Alice Fuller, Delores Barnes, Lyndal Calendar, and Mary Burgess. Travel to improve her craft became a passion, and she traveled across America, as well as internationally. Her most memorable trip was to China in 1988, with a group which included James Bama. It was made more memorable because the trip organizers, assuming Gene was male, paired her with Bama. She quickly set them straight, and she and James had a good laugh. Because of the work involved with painting in oils and acrylics, Gene put her brushes aside. In 2012, at 86, Gene took a workshop from her friend Dean, and learned to work in colored pencil, which became her favorite medium. She said, ‘I can work until I get tired and not have to clean my brushes’.” Show Location Date: Friday, March 29, 2024 Start Time: 10:00am End Time: 4:00pm Where: Ucross Foundation, 30 Big Red Ln, Clearmont, WY 82835, USA On view from February 12 to May 17, 2024.
