The Sheridan/Johnson County Chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society is excited to host our monthly meeting Thursday, September 2nd via Zoom at 7 p.m.

Our speaker this month is Rebecca L. Simon (Assistant State Archaeologist, History Colorado) and she will be discussing, “Tales from the Program for Avocational Archaeological Certification (PAAC). Current and Future Work as a Part of the PAAC”.

The Program for Avocational Archaeological Certification (PAAC) is an educational program for avocational and professional archaeologists. The program facilitates public service and the protection of archaeological resources in Colorado through education, research, and on-the-ground management. Despite not having regular fieldwork because of the pandemic, lab work and classes continue. This past two years provided some assessment of the future of the program and PAAC’s place in ongoing efforts to better protect and respect the past.

Rebecca (Becca) Simon is the Assistant State Archaeologist in the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation at History Colorado. In the past, Becca was a supervisory archaeologist on the Northern Chaco Outliers Project at Crow Canyon Archaeological Center. Becca has Bachelor's degrees from Pennsylvania State University and a Master's degree in Anthropology from Colorado State University. Becca’s experience includes teaching, interpretation, collections management, and cultural resource management. She has field experience in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Kansas, and southern Jordan. Her interests include public outreach and education, Southwest archaeology, the protohistoric era, preservation, and most importantly her dog, Minnie.

Join us for the Chamber’s September Lunch Program, "Why Cities Matter," presented by Samuel Western, Northern Rocky Mountain economic and political history author and former correspondent for the Economist of London. Drive west from Minneapolis and it takes nearly 1500 miles until you reach a major city, Boise. This absence of cities in the Northern Rockies and Great Plains did not happen by accident. According to presenter Samuel Western, in Wyoming we don't have warm fuzzy feelings about anything urban, however, as we move away from carbon-based fuels, which is going to be a while, cities will gain greater significance. Even with oil and gas still a major player, we are looking at cities with different financial dynamics such as Sheridan. Western will look at the history of how the absence of cities in the West came about, why it needs to change and how small cities have a lot to offer right now. Cost is $20 per person, which includes the lunch buffet and program. Advanced registration is required. To register, please call the Chamber at (307) 672-2485 or visit sheridanwyomingchamber.org.

End Time: 8:00pm
Where: WYO Theater, 42 N Main St, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA

The WYO Performing Arts & Education Center in conjunction with Relative Theatrics present The Care & Feeding of Small Animals by Brooke Erin Smith Tuesday September 28 at 6pm. Relative Theatrics, a theatre company founded by Anne Mason and based in Laramie first produced the Wyoming premiere of the dystopian drama this past February and will offer the production at the WYO September 28 as a hybrid theatre/film performance. The “immediate, classic, and prophetic” story presents questions about the expectations placed upon future generations, about consent vs. control, and the philosophical debate regarding predestination. The Care & Feeding of Small Animals is sponsored by the Wyoming Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and Seymour Thickman Family Foundation. The performance is free to the public and will be followed by a Q&A with director, Anne Mason and actor, Noelia Berkes. For more information, call (307) 672-9084.
