A member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Joy is an internationally acclaimed performer, musician, and writer who recently concluded her third term as the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States. She is the first Native American to hold the position. She first came to the area 10 years ago as an artist-in-residence at Ucross. During her craft discussion, Joy will guide the audience through her process of writing, composing and performing. SCLT is excited to host the American Avalanche Institute, whose course is a focused day of rescue practice and learning. This course will cover rescue fundamentals, such as survival statistics, survival strategies, and first response tactics. Learn from experts on Friday night and perfect those skills on the mountain Saturday or Sunday. Field training is at Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation Area on Saturday, February 25 or Sunday, February 26. Limited to 48 participants, with 24 max each field training day. Choose field training day at registration. This training is available at no cost thanks to the Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center. We’ll have hot cocoa for everyone, too! The Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce’s Ag & Natural Resources Committee is hosting their next round of “Lunchtime Conversations About Open Spaces.” This year’s sessions are “Water” on Tuesday, Feb. 28, “Maintaining and Managing Open Spaces” on Tuesday, March 28, and the series will wrap up with an examination of communities that have been successful at maintaining open spaces on Tuesday, April 25. During each session, the topic will be interactively explored with attendees with the focus on what is balanced use of our open space, and can we continue to balance that use into the future? Each session will also discuss the importance of open spaces to our community’s economy and culture now and into the future. Attendees are encouraged to join in with questions and discussion.
